Here are some tips on how to lose weight by swimming:

1. Start slow

Slow and steady wins the race! It’s important to listen to your body. To prevent fatigue and muscle soreness, start by just swimming 10-20 minutes 2-3 times a week. Gradually build this up until you are swimming approximately 30 minutes a day, five days a week. 30 minutes a day is the general goal recommended by the World Health Organisation.

2. Swim in the morning before eating

If you are aiming to lose weight, then try popping into the swimming pool an hour or so before your first meal. As the carbohydrate supplies in your body are depleted as you sleep, swimming before breakfast will burn fat, allowing abundant weight loss.

3. Get swimming lessons

Getting adequate swimming lessons will allow you to build the skills to become a strong and confident swimmer. Learning proper stroke techniques will enable you to swim at a good pace, vital for weight loss.

4. Watch your pace

When you first start swimming, your heart rate sores and in turn you burn a lot of calories. But as your swimming skills improve and you become a stronger swimmer, your heart rate does not increase as much. The best way to keep your heart rate up is by swimming hard and fast!

5. Use weights in the pool

Try and incorporate the use of water dumbbells in the pools in between laps. Water workouts are an effective way to boost your cardio fitness. The water creates resistance, effectively strengthening muscles in your body.

We hope these little tips have helped you but It’s important to remember that exercise and diet go hand in hand. Keeping a nutritional and healthy diet is key. Swimming takes up a lot of energy so it’s vital to refuel with food, especially as the cold water can cause your appetite to increase significantly after a session.
